Scholarship Quest 4: Male Character

Dear Diary,

It's a new day! And I only slept for like 3 hours. Maybe 4. I don't know. But it doesn't matter because I have more work to do (by golly). I only have two more days off from work (5 day weekend after working 30 days) so I don't have time to dilly-dally.

The next thing I have to do for the scholarship is a male character. And I already have one:

I created this steampunk photographer fox in the Concept Art Introduction Class at www.Vanas.ca and you can see the blog posts about the making of it at www.fuzzyoutlaws.com .

I got a pretty good grade on it but I lost some marks in his expression and I missed an opportunity to really play with the fox's natural proportions. After watching the critique video for the fox I know I need to make these adjustments on it before I put it in my scholarship portfolio:

I'm going to get to work. Wish me luck.

Scholarship Quest 3: Finished Exterior Environment

Holy cow, Diary,

3 blog posts in one day. I can assure you I won't be able to keep that up. But I finally have one piece of artwork finished for my scholarship. Behold!

It's about 2 am so there's a good chance I'll see this image in the morning and curse myself for some mistakes that I can't see right now. But I think it'll work for my scholarship application. My character art is much much stronger. I have to make 2 characters. A male and a female. Fortunately I already have the male "almost" finished so I won't have to start from scratch for him. And I have the mechanical objects and one creature done. Woo!

I go back to work on Wednesday so I have two more days to finish everything. Wish me luck!

Scholarship Quest Part 2

Dear Diary,

It's been roughly a day and a half since my last blog post and I still haven't finished any pieces of artwork for this scholarship.

But I've been working on it! Behold my work-in-progress for the natural environment:

I clearly have no idea what I'm doing. I wanted whimsy but not quite to the Dr. Seuss-esque extreme. The good thing about it is that it reminds me why I want to go to art school. BECAUSE I CAN'T DRAW SO GOOD.

I wonder what my competition is like for this scholarship...

No! No time to worry about what other people are doing. Back to work! I will have this picture done TONIGHT!

Concept Art School Scholarship Part 1

Dear Diary,

First post! But I don't have time to write a stupid "This is my first post" post. I got work to do!

This blog is the continuation from the blog posts I've been doing on my webcomic site:

www.fuzzyoutlaws.com
(Go read it. It's awesome, if I do say so myself.)

It's all about my journey through my concept art classes at www.Vanas.ca (I will put a big ol' link to the school on here soon).

I just finished the intro class (posts about that can be found on the www.fuzzyoutlaws.com site) and now I'm trying to get into the 2 year diploma program. The problem is that it costs a butt-load of money. There is, however, a tasty delicious scholarship for 10% (and a less delicious one for 5%) and I want to get it.

This is the criteria:

Concept Art Portfolio Requirements

5 life drawing gestural pieces (please label them as 30 seconds, 2 minutes, 5 minutes and 30 mins)
1 male character (real, cartoony or fantasy)
1 female character (real, cartoony or fantasy)
2 creatures (animals or fantasy)
1 environment (Natural Exterior)
1 environment (Interior)
1 tech design (vehicle, props, machines, etc.)

But my current portfolio is missing just about all of that. So here we go. Starting with "1 Environment (Natural Exterior) because that will be the hardest for me. I suck at environments.

I will post back soon!

Love Michael
